diagram 12. Using the free download on the Loralie Designs website, embroider, print, or create an iron-on transfer of the New Sue poem onto a 6" pale blue square.

3. Sew 1-1/2" x 7-1/2" purple dot pieces to the left and right sides of the basket appliqué piece (see Diagram 1). Stitch 1-1/2" x 7" purple dot piece to the top and bottom.

4. Repeat step 3 for the remaining six blocks, referring to the quilt photo for appropriate block border colors.

5. Lay out the seven blocks. Sew the top row blocks and right column blocks together. Stitch the right column blocks to the large Sunbonnet Sue block, and then sew the top row of blocks on top to complete the 30-1/2" x 39-1/2" quilt center.

6. Stitch 2-1/2" x 42" blue bias check strips to the left and right sides of the quilt center. Press and trim excess. Sew the remaining two 2-1/2" x 42" blue bias check strips to the top and bottom of the quilt; press and trim excess.

7. Layer the batting, backing right side up, and quilt top right side down. Pin the layers together along the raw edges and stitch 1/4" in from the edge. Leave an 8" opening along the bottom. Turn the quilt right side out and quilt as desired. Slip stitch the opening closed.
