Summer 2009

Editor Donna KoenigSummer is all about color! As the world outside fills with bright beautiful color, so can our world inside. By decorating and accessorizing our homes with light, seasonal fabrics, we can bring summer indoors. Blue, green, and violet--the classic, cool shades of nature, give a room sophistication and beauty. That is why we chose these colors for our summer issue! From the tranquil, soft tones of Treasures of the Sea to the watercolor ambiance of Chloe's Morning Glories, each quilt is designed to give your surroundings a refreshing lift.

Looking for a seasonal holiday project? Try making Washington's Legacy just in time to celebrate July 4th. Traditional reds, whites, and blues along with the historical images in the Old Glory IV collection make wonderful Americana reproduction quilts and accessories.

Where is the fabric world going for the remainder of 2009? Luana Rubin gives us some insight into color trends that we can expect to see well into 2010. Luana is a member of the Visions Committee of the Color Marketing Group and has a designer's eye for fashion. In keeping with the times, the predictions are that fabric buying and quiltmaking will reflect selective fabric shopping, some stash depleting, and more handmade projects to keep us frugal and grounded as we emerge from a turbulent economy. As far as design trends go, we will see lots of traditional patterns with the latest, bold, colorful fabrics.
Besides practicality, quilting is a fantastic way to create a work of art. Check out the American Craft Council's fiber artists' gallery. Each artist showcased has a unique style for creating projects using all types of fabric for personal and home décor.

The whole quilting process should be about using fabrics you adore, colors you love, and a pattern that you can't wait to dive into. Many quilters admit that they can get completely lost in the planning and construction of a quilt, which provides them with relief from life's stresses, as well as some down time to be productive and creative. It is our hope that this issue will give you some ideas and inspiration to decorate your own homes with luscious summer color, so take some time to chill out and quilt--it's good for you!
